IHG Rewards Club Points

80% Bonus on points purchases – Ends 31st May 2018 (Buy IHG points).

It seems to be that time of year again where all the major hotel brands start to offer points bonuses on their hotel loyalty currency. April hotel points bonuses are now live. IHG have launched what appears to be the best IHG points promotion if you are looking to purchase IHG Rewards Club points, to redeem at hotel chains including Holiday Inn, Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza.

The latest IHG points promotion offers up to an 80% bonus when purchasing points, and though this is lower than the 100% bonus offered at the end of last year there are some additional benefits.

Firstly, IHG have increased the amount of points you can purchase from 60,000 to 100,000 IHG Rewards Club points. This purchase amount is the amount without any bonus, so if you purchase the maximum amount of IHG points including the bonus you will receive 180,000 IHG Rewards Club points – more than every before. To earn the 80% bonus you need to purchase over 19,000 points. Any purchase of 15,000 or more points will have a 80% bonus automatically applied. Lower purchase amounts can also receive a bonus but of only 40%.

  • Buy under 5,000 points and receive no bonus
  • Buy 5,000 – 19,000 points and receive a 40% bonus
  • Buy 20,000 – 100,000 points and receive a 80% bonus

Secondly, the purchase price for an IHG point has decreased. Now IHG points can be purchased at 1 cent per point, excluding any bonuses, if you purchase over 25,000 IHG points in the same transaction. If you purchase IHG Rewards Club points with the maximum 80% bonus this works out at around £4.00 per 1,000 points (charged in dollars at $5.50 per 1,000).

Purchase IHG points with a 80% bonus before 31st May 2018.

It’s worth remembering that since last year IHG Rewards Club points will expire after 12 months if you have had no activity on your account (IHG define activity as either earning or redeeming). If you do have IHG Rewards Club points that are approaching expiry then you do not need to stay at their hotels to stop your points expiring. You can stop your IHG Rewards Club points balance from expiring by purchasing only 1,000 IHG points.

Offer ends 31st May 2018.

Starwood (SPG) Starpoints

35% Bonus on points purchases – Ends 31st May 2018 (Buy Starpoints).

The merger of Starwood and Marriott created the world’s largest hotel portfolio. Their hotel group empire has over 5,700 properties, in over 110 countries, trading as 30 different hotel brands, with a total of 1.1 million guest rooms. One of the main benefits since the merger is that you can transfer SPG Starpoints instantly into Marriott Rewards, and vice-versa (1 SPG Starpoint = 3 Marriott Rewards points). The fact that you can transfer points between both of the schemes means that you now have access to many more properties if you are looking to book a redemption award for either one or multiple nights. Status is also transferrable and matched between loyalty schemes, plus you can benefit from the current 35% bonus purchasing SPG Starpoints, as you can then transfer points into Marriott Rewards.

Currently when purchasing Starpoints in the Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG) scheme you receive a 35% bonus. You can either choose to keep the points you purchase in the SPG scheme to redeem at Starwood hotels, or transfer to Marriott Rewards instantly if you are planning a Marriott redemption (1 SPG Starpoint = 3 Marriott Rewards points).

The maximum purchase amount of 30,000 Starpoints transfers into 90,000 Mariott Rewards points. Alternatively, as Starwood currently partner with many airlines, several of which that do not sell their own currency (such as Lufthansa Miles & More), this could be a way to earn a bonus on airline mile purchases. Transfers to the majority of airlines is at a rate of 1:1, plus you receive an additional 5,000 airline miles when transferring in groups of 20,000 Starpoints.

To earn the 35% discount you need to purchase a minimum of 5,000 Starpoints before 31st May 2018. Purchases under 5,000 points do not receive a bonus.
